City of Kamloops installs four new rapid flashing beacons for pedestrians

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops’ Transportation Division is installing four new rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFB) to help people cross the street more safely.

These new signals are being installed at the intersection of Mackenzie Avenue and Kenora Road, Tranquille Road at Wilson Street, Tranquille Road and Yew Street (north), and Summit Drive and Whiteshield Crescent South. The first three new signals are operational today (Oct. 28), with the Summit Drive signal going into operation later this fall.

The RRFB crosswalk system is meant to enhance pedestrian safety in Kamloops with high-intensity, pedestrian-activated LED flashing lights that are noticeable for drivers during both the day and at night, and are visible when headlight glare, wet roads or other situations create difficult lighting conditions.

The new signals come after the City installed two RRFBs last fall, one mid-block on Tranquille Road between Knox Street and Palm Street and one at the intersection of Summit Drive and Robson Drive.
