KAMLOOPS — Four games in the season and 18-year-old Dylan Sydor is standing out amongst a roster loaded with young talent.

The Kamloops-raised player is tied for the team lead in scoring with Logan Stankoven.

“Yeah it’s crazy. It’s not what I expected coming into this season,” said Sydor. “Everyone has their roles, but getting that chance on the power play, it’s been a lot of fun.”

His coach Shaun Clouston added, “It is a surprise, a pleasant surprise. I knew he was working really hard this offseason. He’s a very dedicated person. He’s really committed to improvement and finding ways to get better. He had a terrific summer.”

Sydor has a goal and seven assists to help the Blazers start the season a perfect 4-0. Clouston says Sydor improving his strength and speed has been the biggest difference in his early-season success.

“He got stronger, he got faster. He worked on his skills as well. He’s always had real good hands. I think what’s different right now is he’s got some strength. He’s really attacking with speed through the middle of the rink, through the neutral zone. He’s able to round corners in the offensive zone. He’s had a great start,” noted Clouston.

Sydor added, “I’m getting put in different situations. I’m trying to make the most of what I get, but our team’s had a lot of success, starting 4-0, and with team success comes individual success.”

Sydor feels playing some games in the abbreviated hub season last spring helped in his development, and all this success has come while playing mostly fourth-line minutes with fellow rookies Ty Spencer and Emmitt Finnie.

“Definitely, it was a lot quicker than we expected, but the chemistry and knowing where each other’s going to be, it’s happened so fast and it’s really paying off,” he said.

Clouston says the fact Sydor leads the team in scoring while playing on the fourth line is even more impressive. It might make it difficult for the Blazers to keep him down in the line-up, although the fourth-line role could be also contributing to his success.

“Sometimes when you move up it’s a little bit tougher. Maybe that’s one of the reasons for his success is the depth of the team,” noted Clouston. “If you can have players of his caliber play a little bit further down the line-up, it’s tougher for teams to match against you. You get some real good matchups that way. We’ll see. So far, it’s going good. We hope that it continues and I guess if it’s not broke, don’t try and fix it too much.”
