PETERS: The COVID-19 vaccine debate has turned into the irresistible force versus the immovable object

Oct 15, 2021 | 10:57 AM

MY FAVOURITE STORY OF THE WEEK was the one about Sadie, the sales-Husky.

If you didn’t see it, the online story was about a wonderful, weird-looking dog who photobombs her owner’s listings on an online auction page.

It was so completely silly — and that’s exactly why it was my favourite.

Not only that, it was straightforward and the opposite of controversial.

Here’s a goofy-looking dog. See how goofy she looks? That’s it.

It won’t win me any RTDNA awards, but I couldn’t care any less.

For a few fleeting moments as I interviewed Sadie’s owner and wrote up her story, I was transported away from the battle of the irresistible force meeting the immovable object. That is; the COVID-19 vaccine battle.

In one sense, the battle is extremely one-sided. Eighty-nine per cent of eligible British Columbians have received at least one shot. Eleven per cent have received none.

On the other hand, that eleven per cent is very, very powerful.

Powerful enough that they are dominating hospital admissions for COVID-19.

Powerful enough that the impact of their actions has forced dozens of people to be airlifted out of northern B.C. so that hospitals and ICUs are not overwhelmed.

Powerful enough that they are the only reason our society has yet to return to life as normal – life as it should be.

The real reason it is the irresistible force versus the immovable object is because neither side is convincing to the other anymore.

The facts about vaccination are out there in plain sight, whether the unvaccinated choose to acknowledge them or not.

And yet the other side’s appeal to personal freedom is no match for the majority’s sense of public safety and civic duty.

It’s a deadlock and, unlike a good debate, it is producing little more than frustration and anger.

So I’ll take my wild-eyed Sadie and her low pressure sales tactics as a relief valve for some grins and laughs.

Oh, and by the way, she has all her shots.
