KAMLOOPS — The number of relevant COVID-19 exposures has decreased within schools in Interior Health, but new exposures are still being registered.

As of the noon hour on Tuesday (Oct. 12), there were 68 schools on the IH school exposure list. That is down from nearly 100 at the highest level last week.

More schools are seeing their two-week infectious windows expire than new schools being added to the list.

New school exposures in the Kamloops area include A.E. Perry Elementary (Oct. 4-7), Brocklehurst Middle (Oct. 4-7), Cache Creek Elementary (Oct. 4) and Peter Skene Ogden Secondary in 100 Mile House (Oct. 4-6).

Meantime, the level of COVID-19 in Sorrento Elementary School has led the school to institute a form of ‘circuit breaker’ in an effort to prevent spread.

Administrators decided to close the school this week, implementing online learning for Wednesday through Friday. In-person learning will resume next Monday (Oct. 18).

In a letter to parents, IH Medical Health Officer Fatemeh Sabet says the situation is considered a “functional school closure” and not an outbreak. It is meant to support staff and students who are currently self-isolating.
