KAMLOOPS — Thompson Rivers University says it will bestow an honorary doctorate on a groundbreaking Indigenous female judge next week.

At its fall convocation ceremony set for next Friday (Oct. 8), the school will bestow the honorary Doctor of Laws upon Marion Buller.

A member of the Mistawasis Nehiyawak Cree First Nation in Saskatchewan, Buller was called to the bar in 1988, becoming B.C.’s first Indigenous female judge in 1994.

In 2006, Buller is credited with launching the province’s First Nations Court, meant to incorporate traditional restorative justice principles into sentencing proceedings.
