KAMLOOPS — RCMP say a motorcyclist who was killed in a crash in Valleyview Sunday night (Sept. 26) may have run a red light.

The rider was travelling eastbound on the Trans Canada Highway Sunday at about 6:50 p.m. when his motorcycle collided with a Dodge Ram pickup truck at the highway’s intersection with Highland Road.

The collision killed the rider.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) is probing the crash and, in a news release, says the rider passed a marked RCMP van just before the crash.

Speaking to CFJC Today Monday, IIO Chief Civilian Director Ron MacDonald said the investigation will try to determine whether police action or inaction factored into the crash, including whether the RCMP vehicle pursued the motorcycle.

Late Monday, RCMP issued a news release stating its initial investigation “suggests that the motorcycle rider ran a red light and struck the front quarter panel of the left turning pickup.”

Meantime, CFJC Today has confirmed the identity of the motorcyclist as Kamloops resident Donavin Akerley.
