KAMLOOPS — Kamloops council has voted unanimously in favour of carrying the city’s outdoor patio extension pilot program through to next year.

At its regular meeting Tuesday (Sept. 28), council voted unanimously to keep the patio extensions in place in the downtown and North Shore through the winter so they can be used again next summer.

Staff told council the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association surveyed its members and found them clamouring to keep the build-outs.

“The results were overwhelmingly in favour — in the range of 95 per cent in favour — of keeping the extended patios year-round — not surprisingly because they’re the ones that most benefit and use those patios,” said Planning and Development Manager Rod Martin. “There were many positive comments. ‘It livens up the downtown, supports businesses, enjoy the fresh air,’ and on and on.”

The extended patios were first put in place as a way to support restaurants and other businesses in their recovery from the downturn brought on by COVID-19 restrictions.

Many B.C. municipalities have also elected to keep their patio extensions, including the City of Vancouver, which voted to keep them indefinitely. Mayor Ken Christian noted Vancouver typically doesn’t have to contend with snow-clearing.

“This is a pilot and we’re going to continue with the pilot but we’re going to ask the public for their patience in terms of, in particular, snow removal in and around there and the lack of parking,” said Christian.
