South Kam Titans eager to hit gridiron for first time in nearly two years Friday night

KAMLOOPS — It’s been much of the same the last two years for the South Kam Titans and many other football teams across the province — practice — to take a page out of Allen Iverson’s books.

On Friday night, the wait is over, though. The senior Titans are eager to hit someone other than their teammates, and with people to cheer them on.

“Oh tomorrow night, it’s going to be insane,” said Titans player Grayson Peters. “If the restrictions let up, and we’re actually allowed more than 100 people in the stadium, news got out everywhere, so there’s going to be probably over 300, 400 people in there, so it’s going to be a sweet energy.”

There’s going to be rust on both teams — how much is a whole other question. While some teams had the last year off completely, simply just practicing, some of the Titan players were able to get some action in through the Kamloops Minor Football, allowing many to stay somewhat in shape.

“This last year, we got lucky because we got signed up with the community team, so we got to play two games fortunately, so we’re not like all those other teams coming back after two years,” said Peters. “That season off definitely impacted a lot of teams, so it’s a completely different game now with everyone coming back — more eager, more ready to hit.”

The Titans feel lucky to be fielding a team after Westsyde suspended its football season due to low numbers. The Titans’ numbers are down as well, but head coach Brad Yamaoka, the former Kam High football star, says the players are happy to be playing.

“We’ve battled through some stuff. A lot of the guys on the team have stayed active. We’ve been doing work all through COVID, providing we were able to,” said Yamaoka. “For the most part, the guys are just chomping at the bit to get out on the field and compete. It’s been a long time of training — and socially-distanced training — so it’s great to get on the field.”

Yamaoka previously coached this group at the junior level, a group that includes his son Kai and his nephew Ashton, the son of South Kam Athletic Director Corey Yamaoka.

“It’s no different than anybody else. He still gets the gears from me and I try to leave it on the field, but sometimes it carries over to home, but it’s been a good experience,” Brad noted.

Kai added, “It’s interesting. Can’t really slack off or do anything that some other kids might do. I can’t get away from that, considering how he’s right at home…On the field, it’s not too much bonding. It’s him yelling at me because I did something stupid.”

The Titans’ season opener kicks off at 6 p.m. at Hillside Stadium against Rutland.
