KAMLOOPS — McHappy Day is back at McDonald’s across Canada — and money raised will support families in Kamloops and its surrounding areas.

A portion of the proceeds from all menu items at McDonald’s will go to support Ronald McDonald House charities.

The program gives families of sick children a place to stay near the child’s treatment centre.

This is especially important to Kamloops which will be getting its very own Ronald McDonald House room in the new patient care tower at Royal Inland Hospital for local families.

“It’s going to have areas for families to stay, do some laundry, catch up on some work if they need to while their children are sick,” says Brandy Gozda-Sekhon, owner and operator of two McDonald’s locations in Kamloops (Aberdeen and inside Wal-Mart). “The way Ronald McDonald House works completely is you have to be 50 kilometres away from the nearest hospital. Merritt, Clearwater, Williams Lake, any of the surrounding areas will be able to use this room.”

Kamloops is usually in the top 20 list of Canadian cities that raise the most money on McHappy Day. McDonald’s has a goal of raising $6.6 million across the country.

This is the first year all menu items are included in the effort, with 10 per cent of the proceeds being donated.
