Active COVID-19 cases drop considerably on mid island

NANAIMO — While 80 new COVID cases were announced for the mid-Island region, the number of cases considered active regionally dropped considerably.

Data from Island Health published on Monday, Sept. 20 showed 203 active COVID cases in the Central Island zone, representing an 18 per cent drop from last Friday’s update.

Across Island Health, 222 new COVID cases were announced, in line with recent averages and down from a record 114 new cases announced last Friday.

There are 558 active COVID cases currently within Island Health, down by 61.

The Southern part of Vancouver Island continues pacing new COVID cases within the health authority with 124 new cases over the weekend.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of daily COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Sixteen people with the virus are receiving intensive care in Vancouver Island hospitals, an increase of three, according to the BC Centre for Disease Control.

Provincially, there are 5,608 COVID cases considered active with 307 people in hospital, of which 156 are receiving intensive care.

The vast majority of people with COVID-19 in B.C. hospitals are unvaccinated.

A news release from the province noted a data issue prevented updated new case counts to be released on Monday.

Among eligible people 12 and up, 86.8 per cent of British Columbians have received their first dose of COVID vaccine, while 79.4 per cent have received their second shot.
