NANAIMO — While Terry Fox runs across Canada look a lot different again this year for the 41st annual event, there are easy ways to donate toward cancer research.

A virtual event Sunday, Sept 19 involves participants doing neighourhood runs across Canada dubbed ‘Terry Fox Run. One day. Your way.’

“Terry had to stop his Marathon of Hope 41 years ago when his cancer returned,” Terry’s older brother Fred Fox said in a news release. “He asked Canadians to keep on fundraising for cancer research without him so that his dream of finding a cure would one day be realized — and that is exactly what we need to do now.”

A user friendly text to donate option is available by texting ‘Terry’ to 45678, then replying donation amount options of $5, $10 or $20 to be deducted from your phone bill. Your donation will then go directly to the Terry Fox Foundation.

A new Terry Fox Run mobile fundraising app available to download from the Apple App Store or Google Play is also available.

Fox’s Marathon of Hope began on April 12, 1980 in St. Johns. Nfld. and ended nearly five months later in Thunder Bay, Ont. when cancer spread to his lungs.

Fox, who was from Port Coquitlam, died on June 28, 1981 at the age of 22.

Terry Fox runs held around the world have raised $850 million for cancer research.

A Terry Fox Run event at Nanaimo’s Bowen Park generates hundreds of participants. Roughly $350,000 has been raised in Nanaimo from a variety of sources in support of the Terry Fox Foundation.
