KAMLOOPS — CFJC TV hosted its Decision 2021 Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo candidates debate Thursday night (Sept. 16).

Moderated by CFJC’s James Peters, the debate included Conservative Frank Caputo, Iain Currie of the Greens, Liberal Jesse McCormick and Bill Sundhu of the NDP.

Participants put forward policies and opinions on climate change and the environment, truth and reconciliation, affordability and the opioid crisis.

There was sparring between Caputo and Sundhu on the question of tax increases for the wealthy.

“Just saying we’re going to tax the uber-rich — it’s a simplistic solution,” said Caputo.

“Why won’t it work, Frank?” asked Currie.

“Because when you tax the rich at an ultra-high rate, what happens when people take them and their jobs out of Canada?” countered Caputo.

“There’s the defender of the wealthy, right there. Not everyday folks,” said Sundhu.

Currie had criticisms for all of his opponents’ climate plans – starting with the Conservatives.

“It’s not credible; it’s knowing B.S. The Liberals’ plan is better if the Liberals didn’t buy a pipeline — in fact, a climate-killing pipeline. And the NDP plan is the best of these three, but still isn’t enough to meet our international obligations,” said Currie.

And McCormick defended the Liberal government’s purchase of the Trans Mountain pipeline.

“The pipeline accomplishes two objectives — it helps Canadians to secure a fair price for our product and it also helps to ensure that the transportation of petroleum products is safe. There is pipeline infrastructure across the country and it is something that forms part of Canada’s economy,” said McCormick.

“That was more important than fighting climate change?” interjected Currie.

The full debate will be rebroadcast several times over the weekend and can be streamed here.
