RCMP report an increase of phone scams in Merritt

MERRITT, B.C. — The City of Merritt has seen an increase in phone scams to residents over the past few weeks.

Merritt RCMP say scammers are pretending to be the police and are soliciting funds from their victims, saying their loved ones are in jail and need bail money to be released. Recently, a couple was scammed out of $30,000.

“We will never call you and ask for money,” Sgt. Josh Roda says. “We are encouraging residents to be vigilant and not provide personal banking information over the phone.”

RCMP say most phone scammers are from out of country, which can make retrieving any money sent very difficult, if not impossible.
