Take Back the Night returns to Kamloops in new format

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre (KSACC) partook in Take Back the Night – a global movement to stand up against sexualized violence – in the past.

Typically, KSACC would organize a march with people holding signs and walking down the streets as a message to people in the community – women and other marginalized genders that they deserve safety in the world and after dark.

For 2021, KSACC is hosting a trio of events: a pub trivia night at Bright Eye on Sept. 23, a burlesque showcase at Effie Arts Collective on Sept. 24, and a collaborative art project on Sept. 25.

KSACC Agency Coordinator Alix Dolson says they want people to engage with one another after months of limited interaction during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve chosen some activities where women and other marginalized genders might experience less safety,” Dolson says. “In night clubs or pubs… some of that is sometimes drenched in rape culture and propping up sexual violence, so we wanted to challenge that. Same with the burlesque show. Women exhibiting healthy sexuality and body positivity and owning that part of themselves often makes them targets of sexual violence.”

While Dolson says women are disproportionately impacted by sexualized violence, KSACC is inviting adults of all genders and ages to participate in the trio of events.

“Everyone needs to be a part of the solution in solving that,” Dolson says. “My hope is we can demonstrate to the community that there’s interest in addressing these issues. Whether they’re attending these events, or just hearing about them, to know that people care about their safety. They matter. There are folks in the community who do stand alongside [survivors of sexualized violence] and are trying to fix things.”

The pub trivia night is sold out, but tickets are available for the burlesque showcase. The farmer’s market is not ticketed.

KSACC asks that participants are respectful follow the provincial health orders such as masking and providing proof of vaccination.
