KAMLOOPS — A 37-year-old Kamloops man is in custody after a break-in at City Hall Sunday (Sept. 12) evening.

RCMP say a City employee saw a man leaving the building on Victoria Street West with a duffle and two laptop bags. Thanks to the assistance of the employee, police say they were able to locate the suspect, who is known to police, in an alleyway nearby. The suspect awaits a court date.

However, RCMP are still searching for the Mayor’s Chain of Office that was stolen during a separate City Hall break-in on Friday (Sept. 10).

“The Mayor’s Chain of Office is unique and a significant piece of Kamloops history,” Superintendent Syd Lecky says. “We are asking residents to please be on the lookout for the chain. We would appreciate any help the public can provide in assisting with its safe return.”

Both investigations are ongoing. RCMP say it’s unknown if they are related.

Anyone with information is asked to please contact the Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 and reference 2021-32041 or 2021-31719.
