Island Health sees relatively modest COVID-19 increase over long weekend

NANAIMO — The number of new COVID-19 cases found within Island Health over the Labour Day long weekend remained steady and in line with recent trends.

Island Health confirmed 213 new cases on Tuesday, Sept. 7, over four reporting periods. The number of active cases fell by 71 to 384.

Just over 100 of the new cases were discovered in central Vancouver Island, where the number of active cases remained relatively unchanged, dropping from 168 last Friday to 160 on Tuesday.

The BC CDC reported 17 people are hospitalized within Island Health including nine receiving intensive care.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Across B.C., 2,388 new cases were confirmed. The number of active cases sits at 5,465 with 255 people in hospital and 126 of them receiving intensive care.

There were 15 people who passed away over the long weekend due to COVID-19, including four from Island Health.

Earlier on Tuesday, the province announced details of the new vaccine card program due to take effect Sept. 13.
