Skeetchestn Indian Band sets up check points to prevent spread of COVID-19

Sep 5, 2021 | 11:05 AM

SKEETCHESTN — The Skeetchestn Indian Band (SIB) announced that check points are set up at the community entrances until further notice.

The announcement comes after SIB says it’s been notified of two positive cases of COVID-19 in the community. As of Sept. 1, SIB says there are now six positive cases.

SIB says the check points are in place to monitor movements of community members to stop transmission, prevent non-residents from entering due to transmission concerns, protect those most vulnerable in the community (Elders, those with compromised immune systems, children, and the unvaccinated).

Non-residents are asked not to travel to SIB during this time. If they do visit SIB, they’ll be turned away at the check points.

When going through a check point, people are asked to be courteous with staff, state their reasons for going through, drive slowly to ensure safety, and maintain two metres distance from check point staff.

Community members are asked not to hold personal gatherings at this time, as SIB will not hold any public events. Members are also asked to:

  • Keep their social bubble to their immediate household, work, and school
  • Maintain two metres from anyone outside their bubble
  • Wear a mask
  • Wash their hands
  • Only travel if essential
  • Get tested if they feel unwell

Anyone who feels symptoms such as fever or chills, cough, difficulty breathing, or loss of sense or smell, is asked to call Interior Health at 1-877-740-7747 between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. seven days a week to arrange COVID-19 testing.
