Kamloops RCMP reminds walkers and drivers to take extra time ahead of back-to-school traffic
KAMLOOPS — With the first day of school around the corner for Kamloops students on Tuesday (Sept. 7), Kamloops RCMP are reminding walkers and drivers to slow down to get to their destination safely.
Cpl. Dana Napier says children are likely going to be excited heading back to school for the first time since June, so it’s best for Kamloops residents to remove distractions.
“There’s a lot more people on the road both walking and driving,” Napier says. “Allow yourself extra time to cross through intersections, slow down, and watch for the unexpected. Children will be out walking, riding their bikes, scootering, and skateboarding back to school. Expect to see them at intersections, and when you’re backing out of your driveway or garages. We need to give that extra little bit of time in the morning so we can allow those extra five or 10 minutes.”
Children are asked to unplug their earphones, slow down and low both ways before they cross the street, and only walk across marked crosswalks and intersections. Napier recommends walking with a friend and paying attention to their surroundings.
