The COVID-19 pandemic has once again moved Labour Day activities in Kamloops to the online world.

While online activities will replace the annual Labour Day Picnic, an in-person event will take place on Labour Day (Sept. 6) with physical distancing and mask wearing in place.

A healthcare worker rally will take place at 7 p.m. in front of Royal Inland Hospital (RIH). Kamloops and District Labour Council President Lois Rugg says while it’s disappointing the picnic is off for the second year in a row, they want to do what’s right and safe for people.

“I think we’ve all really discovered how important frontline workers are and the sacrifices they do, especially in a pandemic,” Rugg says. “We know that there’s some things we need to do going forward to make sure we can disaster-proof our social safety nets, strengthen our public healthcare, and replace lost jobs as a result of this. Hopefully with better ones.”
