Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo candidates urge public to stop vandalizing campaign signs

KAMLOOPS — Election signs are being vandalized all over the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo riding.

Local candidates are repairing one another’s damaged signs and asking the public to respect their opponents.

“Sign crews are spending about three-to-four hours a day repairing those signs. I’m mindful of the fact that people are in an election that they don’t really want to be in, but we have to respect the democratic process — and people should be voting, not vandalizing,” claimed Frank Caputo, Conservative Party candidate.

Caputo’s former colleague is candidate for the Green Party, Iain Currie — who is on the opposite end of the political spectrum.

The two are longtime friends despite their differing opinions. Currie says his signs are defaced weekly.

“Any vandalism in the context of an election is wrong and stupid,” he told CFJC Today.

“It’s also counter-productive. I can tell you that the best interactions I’ve had with the other candidates have been around the co-operation around putting signs up and letting each other know where and when signs are down,” said Currie.

Most of the candidates have had their signs vandalized, but Jesse McCormick, candidate for the Liberal Party, says he hasn’t.

“Everyone is in this with the belief and effort to try and help out the people of Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo. All the candidates are here because they have a vision for what they think Canada should be and they’re bringing it forth in a positive way and it’s a lot of work,” explained Jesse McCormick.

The People’s Party candidate, Corally Delwo also hasn’t spotted any of her signs vandalized. She stands with McCormick and the rest of her opponents.

“We put our blood, sweat, tears and our dollars into running our campaigns. Regardless of who you support or who you hate or who you don’t like — there’s no reason for that. It’s unfair, it’s unkind,” Delwo said.

NDP Candidate Bill Sundhu believes his signs have been systematically targeted.

“This is vandalism; this is illegal mischief. I can tell you we have reported this to police and the police are investigating. If the culprits are identified and caught, they should be prosecuted. They are defacing property,” Sundhu said.

All of the candidates say they have repaired one another’s signs at different points and express a mutual respect for one another. They hope the public will do the same.
