NANAIMO — The number of new COVID-19 cases found within central Vancouver Island has matched tallies from the day before.

Island Health on Thursday, Sept. 2 confirmed 25 new COVID-19 cases in the area, the same increase as Wednesday’s update. There are currently 171 active cases in the central area, up from 162 on Wednesday.

The health authority saw 76 new cases on Thursday, up from the daily average of around 60 one week before.

There are currently 461 active COVID-19 cases within Island Health.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Across the province, 801 new cases were confirmed. There are 199 people in hospital with 116 of them receiving intensive care.

B.C. is still dealing with 5,931 active cases while six more people passed away, all within Interior Health.

Nearly 77 per cent of those eligible in the province have received their second dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Around 76 per cent of Nanaimo residents aged 12 and up and 77 per cent of Oceanside residents have received two doses.

Between 83 and 84 per cent of people on the central Island have received at least one dose.

New restrictions were put in place in Northern Health on Thursday by provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

This includes a return to stricter capacity limits both indoors and outdoors at public and private spaces.

The restrictions come into effect on Sept. 7, after the Labour Day long weekend.

Further details on vaccine passports in B.C. are expected on Tuesday. The program will limit access to non-essential businesses and events come Sept. 13 for those without proof of at least one vaccine dose.

Two doses will be required by Oct. 24.
