SOUND OFF: Cultural diversity in the workplace — why is it so beneficial for business in Kamloops?

Sep 1, 2021 | 2:23 PM

COMPANIES THAT EMBRACE DIVERSITY are 35% more likely to show profitable returns than their competitors. In Kamloops, people are quick to say variety is the spice of life; however, there are still some who find it hard to accept choices, beliefs and orientations different from theirs. People of colour, for instance, may not get as many chances of being hired or be promoted into leadership roles.

Differences in race, sexual orientation and religion have caused many issues in business, especially in the U.S. The good news is, this predicament is nowhere as severe in Kamloops as it is in some parts of the States. However, business owners around the world — including British Columbia — are encouraged to have a deeper look and consider how they can improve the situation for their employees of all backgrounds.

The Importance of D&I Initiatives

Many business owners in Canada understand the importance of diversity and inclusion (D&I) initiatives, which is why recently, “Canada has launched a new package of measures designed to remove barriers and promote inclusion and accessibility in its public services, emphasizing its commitment to improving diversity.” as reported by The Global Government Forum. As well as being the right thing to do from an ethical perspective, D&I also makes good business sense. In service sectors in particular, customers are increasingly looking at D&I when choosing service providers.

However, in some parts of Canada, including a small portion of Kamloops, business owners are still lagging in fulfilling their diversity and inclusion promises. Some have hired D&I experts, which is a very admirable initiative, but do not involve themselves fully in the mission. What’s important to bear in mind, though, is that CEOs have to incorporate diversity and inclusion throughout the organization’s structure, as it is the only way to get outstanding results. D&I It is not a one-time initiative; it must be part of a company’s goals and mission.

It Starts with Higher Education

Although the field of D&I might still be a new concept to many, higher education institutions are encouraged to foster inclusive education to prepare a future workforce that is aware of the sensitivities around diversity. The importance of a faculty that intends to change students’ mental perceptions to usher them into an equitable workplace is crucial in creating systematic changes in business management.

On a positive note, in Canada, great strides have been made in the right direction, as reported by Mariah Bohanon of Insight into Diversity, “In October 2017, the presidents of 96 universities throughout Canada unanimously endorsed a set of priorities — known as the Inclusive Excellence Principles — that serve as a definitive commitment from each institution to work toward becoming more equitable for students and employees.”

Benefits of Diversity in Business Management

Diversity in business has a lot of benefits. It is not only an initiative that satisfies a group of people, but it also has a positive effect on business productivity. What Kamloops’ business owners should know is that diversity and inclusion provide the balance of voices and diversity of thought that every business needs.

In other words, differences in race or colour should not determine or hinder a person’s chances of getting a job — merit should. Consequently, a business that creates a conducive environment irrespective of differences will have a high productivity rate. When employees are comfortable with the business policies, they contribute. Happy employees are always productive.

In a business where diversity is not accepted, lack of employee retention is common. Employee retention plays a massive role in the progress of a business. Sourcing for talents qualified to take on roles can sometimes be challenging. Not being able to retain talent is even a bigger problem for many Canadian companies.

To improve hiring practices in Kamloops, employers can partner with organizations like ACCES Employment. Such an agency can help business owners address hiring barriers and educate their colleagues about the importance of diversity at the workplace.
