Island Health active COVID-19 cases rise by more than 150 in one week

NANAIMO — The number of active COVID-19 cases within Island Health rose sharply in one week of the fourth wave.

Island Health reported 523 active cases in the health authority on Monday, Aug. 30. This is a rise of 165 from the previous Monday when there were 358 active cases.

In one week, Island Health added 412 COVID-19 cases, equalling roughly 60 new cases a day.

The 187 new cases found over the recent weekend is in line with last weeks trend.

The weekend before, 124 new cases were found when the number of active cases reached 358.

The central Island area saw 79 new cases, with active cases rising by 29.

The south Island area remains the hardest hit with 93 new.

There were two new fatalities across Island Health.

The BC CDC reported 13 people are in Island hospitals, including 10 people receiving intensive care.

Provincially, 1,853 new cases were announced over the previous three days with 5,918 cases considered active, a substantial increase of 261 cases.

Across the province 176 people are in hospital, of which 91 are receiving intensive care.

The province announced between Aug. 13-26 people not fully vaccinated accounted for 81.7 per cent of the cases and 85.8 per cent of the hospitalizations.
