B.C. reports 698 new COVID-19 cases, including 252 within Interior Health

VICTORIA – Over the past 24 hours, the B.C. government reports 698 new COVID-19 cases in the province, including five epi-linked cases, with 252 in Interior Health.

Provincially, there are 5,356 active cases, with 1,911 of those in Interior Health. Of the active provincial cases, 139 individuals are in hospital, with 75 in intensive care. According to the B.C. COVID-19 dashboard, Interior Health as 45 hospitalizations with 22 of them in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.

There was one new death reported in Fraser Health on Wednesday (Aug. 25). The provincial total is 1,802.

Elsewhere, there were 203 new cases in Fraser Health (1,294 active), 29 in Vancouver Coastal Health (1,347), 69 in Island Health (470) and 45 in Northern Health (322). There were no new cases reported from people who reside outside of Canada, although that active count is at 12.

There have been two new health-care facility outbreaks at Brock Fahrni in Vancouver and Spring Valley Care Centre in Kelowna, for a total of 14 active outbreaks in B.C.

Eleven of the active outbreaks at health-care facilities are in Interior Health, including Nicola Meadows in Merritt.

As of Aug. 25, 83.5 per cent (3,869,329) of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 75.4 per cent (3,493,119) received their second.

Cases by vaccine status

From Aug. 10 to 23, the B.C. government says people not fully vaccinated accounted for 83.3 per cent of cases and 85 per cent of hospitalizations.

On Aug. 23, 68.4 per cent of new cases (372) came from those who were unvaccinated, 9.7 per cent were partially vaccinated (53) and 21.9 per cent were fully vaccinated (119).

For hospitalizations between Aug. 10 and 23, 77 per cent were unvaccinated (144), eight per cent were partially vaccinated (15) and 15 per cent were fully vaccinated (28).
