Liberal party names First Nations lawyer as Kamloops-area candidate
KAMLOOPS — The Liberal party has selected lawyer Jesse McCormick as its candidate for the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo region in the Sept. 20 federal election.
McCormick stepped in after the party’s original acclaimed candidate, George Petel, withdrew four days after his candidacy announcement.
“I’m First Nations, I’m an Anishinaabe person and it was the strong commitment to the reconciliation agenda that ultimately brought me to the Liberal Party of Canada — but it’s also been the work we’ve done in supporting Canadian families,” McCormick told CFJC News.
McCormick said the Liberals’ goal to advance environmental protection and climate change resonate with him as well — something that really hit him when he fled from his Texas Creek home this summer because of the Lytton Creek fire.
