LOGAN LAKE, B.C. — The United Steelworkers Local 7619 at Highland Valley Copper will be hosting a thank-you barbecue in Logan Lake for wildland and structural firefighters and to welcome the community home.

Logan Lake residents were able to head home on Thursday (Aug. 19) afternoon after a week-long evacuation order prompted by the monstrous Tremont Creek wildfire.

Both wildland and structural firefighters from all over British Columbia and Alberta showed up to stop the fire from hitting the community — and they were successful with not one structure harmed.

“I think it was more than 170 firefighters and 70 different trucks out there,” said Kyle Wolff, president of USW Local 7619.

“I’ve been talking to members and families, and they’re grateful to be home. And they said that other than the burnt-out outside of the town, the town looks fantastic and they did a tremendous job protecting the community,” he continued.

The entire community of Logan Lake was evacuated, including the Highland Valley Copper mine. It was the mine’s first interruption in over 50 years of operation.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity to bring everybody out in the community to say ‘Hi’ and to share food. And to take a day off from cooking, there’s a lot of people that lost things in their fridges and they’re trying to restock,” Wolff told CFJC Today.

The barbecue will take place at the Logan Lake campground on Sunday, Aug. 22 at noon. The event will still take place despite Interior Health’s new public health guidelines.
