Mudslides add to fire woes
KAMLOOPS — It’s hard to go anywhere in the province this morning (Tuesday), especially if you want to head west.
The Coquihalla between Merritt and Hope was closed overnight because of wildfire danger from the July Mountain and Brook Creek wildfires, which have pretty much overlapped. Emergency crews said it was critical for public safety to keep the highway closed in the overnight hours, where people can become disoriented and driving conditions are very poor.
Now, we have mudslides on the Trans Canada Highway in the Fraser Canyon. A mudslide late yesterday has closed the Trans Canada in both directions from Lytton to Cache Creek. As well, another slide hit a portion of Highway 12.between Six Mile and Pine Ridge Road.30 kilometers of that road are closed this morning.
An assessment will be done first thing this morning to determine the extent of the damage. There is no detour available, so you pretty much have to go south via Highway 5A and catch up with highway 3 at Princeton. But the Hope-Princeton highway is under a travel advisory as well because of wildfires near Copper Creek.
