COVID-19 cases continue rising in Island Health, 24 new

NANAIMO — The steady increase of COVID-19 cases in Island Health continues.

Island Health confirmed 24 new COVID-19 cases within the health authority on Tuesday, Aug. 17. This is down from the 37 new per day over the weekend and in line with the average number of new cases the week before.

The new cases were split primarily between the central and southern areas.

There are currently 282 active cases within Island Health, a rise of 16 from the day before.

Central Vancouver Island has 96 active cases, a rise of nine from the day before.

There was one new death in Island Health, the only life lost in the last 24 hours due to COVID-19. So far in the pandemic, 42 people died in Island Health out of the nearly 1,800 lives lost across B.c.

There remains seven people in hospital with three in intensive care, one less than the day before.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Across B.C. a further 501 new COVID-19 cases were reported. The number of active cases is just shy of 5,200 with 111 people in hospital and 51 receiving intensive care.
