B.C. reports 501 new COVID-19 cases, 205 in Interior Health

KAMLOOPS — Interior Health accounted for less than 50 per cent of B.C.’s new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday (Aug. 17).

B.C. is reporting 501 new cases of COVID-19, including nine epidemically-linked cases, with 205 of them (41 per cent) in Interior Health.

There are 5,296 (+206) active cases of COVID-19 in B.C., with 3,084 (+102) of them in Interior Health. Provincially, 111 individuals (+7) are in hospital, with 51 (+4) in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.

In the past 24 hours, one new death was reported in Island Health. The provincial total is now 1,781.

Elsewhere, there were 139 new cases in Fraser Health (932 active), 92 in Vancouver Coastal Health (758 active), 35 in Northern Health (206 active), and 28 in Island Health (307 active). There were two new cases of people who reside outside of Canada for a total of nine active.

There are seven active outbreaks in long-term care facilities in the province. Four are in Interior Health (Nelson Jubilee Mano, Kootenay Street Village, Cottonwoods Care Centre in Kelowna and Brookhaven Care Centre in West Kelowna), two in Fraser Health (Kin Village West Court in Delta and Evergreen Baptist Care Society in White Rock) and one in Island Health (Discovery Harbour in Campbell River).

In assisted or independent living facilities, there are three outbreaks in Kelowna: the second floor of Village at Mill Creek, Hawthorn Park and David Lloyd Jones Home.

As of Tuesday, 82.7 per cent of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, while 73.5 per cent have received their second.
