KAMLOOPS — A portion of the damage caused by the White Rock Lake wildfire is being discovered.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) is reporting that 28 primary residences and one commercial structure have been lost due to the 57,947-hectare fire as of Saturday (Aug. 14) morning, with most of them in the Monte Lake and Paxton Valley Road area.

“There are hurt structures throughout the area, but the level of damage is not known at this time,” TNRD Emergency Operations Centre Information Officer Andrew Roebbelen told CFJC Today. “What may look really bad from the outside may simply be melted vinyl, whereas metal structure may look fine on the outside but there’s significant damage. Hurt structure doesn’t tell us a lot until insurance adjusters get in there and can actually do proper assessments. But for those 28, there’s not much standing.”

Roebbelen says the true assessment of damage will come over the next few weeks as residents return home and find out what’s salvageable. There are no other reports on damaged structures due to the White Rock Lake wildfire.

Residents in the Highway 97 corridor near Monte Lake were allowed to return home yesterday (Aug. 13) but are still on evacuation alert. Roebbelen says properties in the backroads are still on evacuation order until B.C. Wildfire Service says it’s safe for residents to return.

TNRD residents who have lost property are encouraged to contact the Resiliency Centre in Kamloops.

Should conditions change, the TNRD said an evacuation alert or order could be reinstated as necessary.

Information for returning residents is available online.
