Island Health nears 200 active COVID-19 cases

NANAIMO — The number of active COVID-19 cases with Island Health continues to climb.

There are 193 active cases as of Thursday, Aug. 12, a rise of eight from the day before. There were significantly more new cases announced on Thursday, with 23 new bringing Island Health to 5,526 total cases.

Three of the new cases were in the central Island area, which now has 69 active cases. This is a drop of four from the day before.

Most of the new cases were found in the southern Island area.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

The province now has more than 3,800 active cases, which is the highest its been in months. Thankfully only 81 people are in hospital with 33 of those people receiving intensive care.

82.3 per cent of eligible people 12 and older have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. 71.6 per cent of the eligible population has received their second dose.

One new death was reported, in the Interior.
