Active COVID-19 cases within Interior Health increases to 2,199

VICTORIA — With thousands of active COVID-19 cases, the Interior Health (IH) region continues to be the highest area of new case counts in B.C.

In today’s (Aug. 12) update, the province says 513 new cases have been identified around B.C., 271 of which were reported in IH.

As of Thursday, there are 3,834 active virus cases in the province. Of those, 2,199 cases are in the IH.

The B.C. Government also states one new virus-related fatality has occurred in the Interior Health region, for a provincial total of 1,779. Of the active cases in B.C., 81 individuals are in hospital and 33 are in intensive care.

So far, 82.3 per cent (3,814,635) of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 71.6 per cent (3,318,751) received their second dose. In addition, 83.1 per cent (3,596,148) of all eligible adults in B.C. have received their first dose and 73.3 per cent (3,168,620) have received their second dose.

The new/active cases include:

* 108 new cases in Fraser Health
* Total active cases: 750

* 92 new cases in Vancouver Coastal Health
* Total active cases: 539

* 271 new cases in Interior Health
* Total active cases: 2,199

* 13 new cases in Northern Health
* Total active cases: 116

* 29 new cases in Island Health
* Total active cases: 220

* no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada
* Total active cases: 10

There are eight active outbreaks in long-term care homes within the Fraser, Interior, and Island Health authorities.
