Tremont Creek wildfire smoke to intensify with planned ignition efforts: BCWS

Aug 10, 2021 | 3:44 PM

KAMLOOPS — If you’re seeing extra smoke billowing from the Tremont Creek wildfire today (Aug. 10), the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says part of that is due to a planned ignition.

In a notice posted to Twitter, BCWS says crews are conducting a planned ignition on the east side of the Tremont Creek wildfire today.

The planned ignition is meant to reinforce machine guards but it does mean more smoke is visible to surrounding communities.

According to the latest update on the BCWS wildfire information website, the Tremont Creek fire remains classified as out of control at 36,724 hectares.

BCWS notes that fire was extremely active on the east and northeast sides within Tunkwa Provincial Park and is currently burning down the north slope of Mt. Savona. Guards have also been built next to Tunkwa Lake road, down to and including Haywood Farmer road.

Meantime the Wildfire Service says the northern flank of the fire from Barnes Lake to Walhachin continues to show very minimal to no fire activity.

The communities of Savona, and Tobiano remain on evacuation alert, along with the District of Logan Lake, and the Ashcroft Indian Band. Evacuation orders remain in place for the Oregon Jack Creek Indian Band and a series of properties along the Tunkwa Lake Road south of Savona.
