NANAIMO — British Columbia’s active case counts of COVID-19 continue to rise.

A further 395 cases were announced on Tuesday, Aug. 10, slightly above the BC Centre for Disease Control’s seven day average of 346.

Most of the new cases were found in the Interior where skyrocketing transmission have forced public health to bring back public health orders related to masks.

Active cases across B.C. increased to 3,284 with 71 people in hospital including 23 within intensive care. The BC CDC lists one person hospitalized within Island Health.

Island Health reported 24 new cases within its borders on Tuesday, including eight from the central Island region.

A total of 175 cases were currently active across the health authority. The central Island accounted for 70, with 92 in the south and 13 to the north.

On Monday, Aug. 9, the province accelerated its vaccination program by trimming the required wait time between doses one and two of vaccine from seven weeks to four.

Notifications for those who have received a single dose of vaccine and are now eligible for a second started going out Monday night.

Just over 82 per cent of people aged 12 and up have received at least a single dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine. 70.6 per cent of people have received two doses and are considered fully vaccinated.

To date, nearly 7.1 million doses of vaccine have been administered to people across B.C.
