KAMLOOPS — The Liberal Electoral District Association for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo announced the party’s candidate for the next federal election.

George Petel, a lawyer who was born in Kamloops and raised in the Bonaparte-Cache Creek-Ashcroft area, will represent the federal Liberals in the riding.

“I am an entrepreneur at heart and love the entrepreneurial spirit that flows throughout our riding,” Petel stated. “I find the generosity of friends and strangers in our riding to be inspiring. I have experienced firsthand, with my own businesses, that you are quick to offer help with ideas and resources to see others succeed. Issues that are important to me are, in part, reflected in the organizations that I volunteer my time: I believe in a strong economy, I believe in helping vulnerable people, and I believe in environmental sustainability.”

Petel is of Secwépemc and Caucasian heritage, and attended St. Ann’s Academy, John Peterson Junior Secondary, and Kamloops Senior Secondary. He said completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Calgary, then attended the University of British Columbia’s Allard School of Law. He said he went on to work at a national law firm in Calgary.

Two other parties have announced their respective candidates for the next federal election: Bill Sundhu for the NDP and Corally Delwo for the People’s Party.

The Conservative Party has four options to replace MP Cathy McLeod, who’s not seeking re-election, as its nominee: Frank Caputo, Bev DeSantis, Michael Grenier, and Ward Stamer.

The 44th Canadian federal election will take place on, or before, Oct. 16, 2023. An election has yet to be called.
