WILDFIRE EVACUATIONS

How to volunteer with City of Kamloops ESS

KAMLOOPS — City of Kamloops Emergency Support Services has put out a call for volunteers to help evacuees from the wildfires which currently surround the city.

Evacuation orders and alerts continue to rise as a result of growth on several fires around the city, including the Tremont Creek and White Rock Lake wildfires.

City officials expect the number of evacuees to continue to grow, so they’re hoping Kamloops residents can step up and offer their time.“We’ll provide all the training and make sure you’re ready to go,” City of Kamloops ESS Coordinator Rebecca Cooke explains.

“We’d love people who are comfortable working on computers, comfortable working with evacuees directly over the phone. [We are looking for] those who are able to complete the police information checks that are required to work with this vulnerable information, and those who are able to complete the training. The training is really important to make sure people are set up and ready to go.”

So far, around 80 volunteers have provided around 7000 hours of service within the ESS Reception Centre at Mac Island. With a training opportunity that begins on August 7th, ESS Coordinator Rebecca Cooke says the city needs to increase its numbers quickly.

“Right now we’re trying to build capacity. Our volunteers who have been working so many hours, we’d like to give them a break. As many volunteers are interested and willing to take the training. We will onboard and rotate them in as soon as possible.”
