Planned ignitions underway for Flat Lake wildfire as conditions improve in the Cariboo

100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — Conditions improved around the 53,211 hectare Flat Lake wildfire Tuesday (Aug. 3) afternoon, allowing B.C. Wildfire Service officials to give the green light to conduct strategic burns to establish a perimeter around the blaze. It says if conditions change, planned ignitions can be adjusted or halted.
Planned burns for the for the Meadow Lake Road, Dog Creek Road, and Gustafson East FSR area on the southwest edge of the Flat Lake fire were postponed Monday (Aug. 2) due to what B.C. Wildfire Service called extremely poor visibility and weather conditions on site.
On the east flank, crews will continue mop up and securing areas around the perimeter by dealing with hotspots. Aerial support is available to assist in the work.
B.C. Wildfire Service stated heavy equipment and operators will work on the Forest Service Roads in the area. A temporary road closure has been put in place for 1100 Road – also known as Gustafsen Lake Forest Service Road and Gustafsen/Dog Creek Forest Service Road – due to an increase in traffic, and to keep first responders and the public safe while heavy equipment works on the roadway.
