Kamloops RCMP prepare for one of the largest public events since start of pandemic

KAMLOOPS – Kamloops Mounties are asking residents to be mindful of their safety and the safety of others as the downtown prepares for what will likely be its largest event since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in 2020.

The annual ‘Hot Nite in the City’ returns Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hundreds of vehicles are expected to be on display and large crowds are expected.

“As this is one of the first big events since COVID-19 restrictions eased, we would like to remind those attending to be responsible and considerate of other people in attendance and of the community,” said Corporal Dana Napier of the Kamloops RCMP Crime Prevention Unit.

The event comes as the COVID-19 cases continue to rise, driven by the more contagious Delta variant. Last week, Interior Health declared an outbreak in the Central Okanagan. The Interior Health region continues to report the most new daily cases within B.C. with numbers rivaling the peaks of the second wave late last year and the third wave in the spring.

While the mask mandate was lifted with Phase 3 of the provincial government’s restart plan, health officials still recommend them for those who haven’t been fully vaccinated for at least 14 days.

Victoria Street will be closed to all vehicle traffic between the 100 and 600 blocks for vehicles registered in the event.

Kamloops RCMP also will be conducting enhanced traffic safety enforcement as well, with zero tolerance for impaired and unsafe driving.
