Dozens of evacuee animals returning home as evacuation orders ease

KAMLOOPS — In July, the B.C. SPCA reduced its adoption prices in half to free up space for animals evacuated due to the ongoing wildfires.

General Manager of Communications Lorie Chortyk said they were able to adopt out 366 animals during that promotion, but more space is being freed up by evacuated animals returning home.

In total, the B.C. SPCA took in 153 animals for emergency boarding since evacuation orders started to get issued. Now, only 67 are still in care.

“Thankfully, many of these people are able to go back home now and they’re coming and claiming their animals,” Chortyk told CFJC Today. “We’re very happy to see them reunited. Although we still have requests here and there, we’re able to accommodate new animals coming in now. Where there are still orders underway, we want to be there for those families and their animals. We’re in better shape than we were a couple of weeks ago.”
