KAMLOOPS – The BC Wildfire Service is preparing for a challenging weekend with temperatures heating up and the possibility of lightning moving through the region. The fire danger rating for the southern half of the province ranges from high to extreme.

The Kamloops Fire Centre already has its hands full with 80 of the province’s 245 active fires burning. Many of the fires are significant.

The Sparks Lake wildfire west of Kamloops remains the largest in the province at over 65 thousand hectares. There are 78 firefighters working on the ground along with 9 helicopters and 32 pieces of heavy equipment. In addition there are a series of structure protection specialists working to protect properties on the southern flanks of the fire.

Meantime the White Rock Lake wildfire south east of Kamloops is expected to continue to grow to the east and northeast. The Wildfire Service says elevated fire behaviour is being seen along the fire lines.

Fire officials have not ruled the possibility of further Evacuation Alerts and Evacuation Orders being issued. The Thompson Nicola Regional District has implemented an Evacuation Order for 85 properties and has issued an Evacuation Alert for another 576 properties. Evacuation Orders have also been issued by the Columbia-Shuswap Regional District, and the Regional District of North Okanagan around the fire.

117 firefighters, including 100 from Quebec, are battling the blaze. The Wildfire Service says heavy smoke is making it very difficult to fight the fire and is leading to power outages as hydro lines are impacted.
