KAMLOOPS – The Kamloops Elizabeth Fry Society will be looking to develop methods to overcome gender inequality through the support of the federal government’s Feminist Response and Recovery Fund. A $300,000 grant has been earmarked for the local group over the next three years.

Cassandra Schwarz, the executive director of the Kamloops Elizabeth Fry Society, says the money will support a program to reduce gender inequalities. “We’re going to be facilitating a community roundtable with participation from the City of Kamloops, TRU, and local non-profits, looking at ways we can address the systemic barriers that women are facing in our community.”

“We know there is still gender based inequalities. We still know there is a pay gap. We know that there is limited access to gender based services in our community,” says Schwarz. “It’s really a chance to see how we can do better and make sure we have gender based analysis in some of the programs and plans for our community to ensure the distinct needs of women, marginalized women and racialized women is taken into account.”

The fund supports jobs within feminist organizations across Canada. Maryam Monsef, the Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development says “these caring professionals will support women’s economic security and improve health and safety.”

In a news release, the federal government states “advancing gender equality is a key priority for the Government of Canada.” It says the pandemic has magnified systemic and longstanding inequalities, with women and girls disproportionately impacted by the crisis.
