NANAIMO — Snuneymuxw First Nation has taken another step on the path to fulfilling treaty rights and reclaiming traditional property.

A new tripartite Memorandum of Understanding between SFN, the province and the federal government was signed on Wednesday, July 28.

“Getting to this day has been a long journey for our chiefs and leaders,” chief Mike Wyse said in a release. “Snuneymuxw people have survived difficult times and we are focused on recovering our traditional territories and marine areas, and protecting them for the future.”

The MOU sets out priority items for resolution among all three parties, including implementing the 1854 Treaty and near-term land reconciliation.
