Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh to visit former Kamloops Residential School

TK’EMLUPS — The leader of the federal New Democrats will be making a stop in Kamloops tomorrow (July 29), and meeting with Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc chief and council.

As part of a week-long tour of Indigenous communities, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh will be visiting the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School while he’s in the area.

Recently, more than 200 burial sites believed to be children were detected on the grounds using Ground Penetrating Radar. At the latest update hosted by Tk’emlúps on July 15, Kukpi7 Rosanne Casimir and council stated they want all student attendance records of the residential school released by the federal government, and the Oblates of Mary Immaculate to help with the identification process.

Singh will be meeting with Kukpi7 Casimir, and Tk’emlúps councillors, followed by a press conference with Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo NDP Candidate Bill Sundhu about how the party plans to fight for justice for Indigenous peoples.

After the Kamloops tour, Singh will be travelling to the Penticton area on Friday (July 30).
