KAMLOOPS — Chad Grimm, head coach of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s volleyball team, has the opportunity to add further experience to his already impressive resume after he was named as an assistant coach with the Canadian Indoor Women’s Senior Team.

“It’s always fun to put on your country’s colours and I’m definitely looking forward to having that opportunity,” said Grimm. “There’s no doubt I’m going to learn a lot of things, gain new experiences and further some connections in the volleyball world.”

Joining head coach Shannon Winzer’s staff for a limited spell, Grimm will first head to a training camp in Richmond before travelling with the team to Guadalajara, Mexico for the NORCECA Continental Championship running Aug. 24-Sept. 1. While the Canadian women did not qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the NORCECA tournament that will see them square off against regional powers such as USA and Trinidad and Tobago will act as a stepping-stone on the team’s path to qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

For Grimm, who represented Canada at the youth level as an athlete and has ran various tryout camps for different national team programs, this will be his first formal role with Team Canada as a coach.

“It’s a great opportunity for great professional development. I’ll get to see some new things, work with different coaches and another level of athlete as well,” said Grimm. “Some of those things will be applicable to bring back to TRU and some won’t.”

A long-time assistant coach with the men’s volleyball team at TRU, Grimm took over as head coach of the women’s program in 2014-15 and hasn’t looked back since. Inheriting a team that went 0-44 in conference play the two seasons prior, Grimm has gone on to rack up a 71-73 regular season record, has qualified for the Canada West playoffs in four of the last five seasons and won the first playoff series in program history in 2019-20 with a 2-0 sweep of the MacEwan Griffins.

“Everyone here with the WolfPack is incredibly proud of Chad for taking this monumental step in his coaching career,” said Curtis Atkinson, director of athletics and recreation. “He has done a fantastic job building our program, and he has earned this amazing opportunity. I know that he will represent Canada and the WolfPack well on the international stage and look forward to the learnings he will bring back to Kamloops.”
