KAMLOOPS — There was no medal waiting at the end, but Catharine Pendrel from Kamloops crossed the finish line with a smile worth gold at the Olympic Mountain Bike Cross Country race in Tokyo today.

Pendrel finished 18th out of 37 riders that started the race

Her time was one hour, 23 minutes and 47 seconds, 8:01 behind the gold medal winner from Switzerland, as Swiss riders swept the podium.

Pendrel, who gave birth to daughter Dara exactly six months ago on January 26th, told CFJC Sports before leaving for Tokyo that she intends to retire from World Cup racing after this season.

The 2016 bronze medalist from the RIO Olympics post a message on Facebook today, saying “Heart is full. It is such an honour to compete at the Olympics and crossing the finish line having done my best, with cheering fans and the special group of women that make up the MTB (mountain trail bike) racing circuit surrounding me is a memory I will cherish.”

Catherine Pandrel is capping off a remarkable career that along with the Olympic bronce in RIO five years ago, includes two world championships in 2011 and 2014, a Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2014, a gold medal at the 2007 Pan American Games and bronze at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto.
