NANAIMO — Reports of a dead body floating at Westwood Lake may have been a false alarm.

RCMP, along with Nanaimo Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance were called to Westwood Lake around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 25 after a woman paddling reported seeing a body floating in the water.

Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW she paddled back to shore from the south end of the lake and used a phone at the lifeguard station to call 911.

“We were in the water with [Nanaimo Fire Rescue’s] quick response vessel, searched the area for about an hour with negative results and stayed at the lake for most of the evening to see if any vehicles were left behind or if anyone showed up acting in a frantic sense looking out towards the water.”

An underwater recovery team were dispatched to the scene and searched the area, but nothing was found.

O’Brien added they’ve had no further reports or indications a body was found or someone is missing from the area.

“We’ll continue to monitor the lake and our members will be in the area and answer any questions if anybody has any concerns.”

Police are following up with the woman who made the 911 call.
