KAMLOOPS — The drought situation has worsened in Merritt. The Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development have informed the City of Merritt that the watershed is now in Drought Level 4. Five is the highest level.

Director of Corporate Services Greg Lewis says effective immediately, no sprinkling of lawns or flower gardens is allowed. Previous sprinkling regulations will still be in effect for vegetable gardens. And hand-held controlled-flow nozzles can still be used at any time.

Lewis says they will be increasing patrols and violators will be ticketed. He says there will be no exemptions for things like laying new turf. The Rotary Park Spray Park will remain open for the time being. The City is also ending irrigation of flowers and grass in city parks.
