City of Kamloops suspends business license for The Loop non-profit on Tranquille Road

KAMLOOPS — The operator of North Shore non-profit service provider The Loop says the City of Kamloops has suspended its business license.

The move comes two months after the City of Kamloops designated The Loop, located at 405 Tranquille Road, as a nuisance property.

In a news release, operator Glenn Hilke says he was pleased to see Wednesday’s City of Kamloops announcement of day spaces for those experiencing homelessness.

However, Hilke says he didn’t understand the City’s decision to pull his organization’s funding and suspend its business license, given the service gaps it fills on the North Shore.

“We fail to see how taking away 100 per cent of our funding to The LOOP by the City of Kamloops… is going to be anything but a detriment to both the people we serve as well as to the community as a whole,” said Hilke.

Hilke says The Loop focuses on food security and other services for “the most vulnerable and complex community members”, but local residents and businesses have been critical of nuisance issues that centre around the facility.

Wednesday, a Kamloops resident captured a physical confrontation outside the centre’s doors on video.
