Lions slowly bring QB Reilly back into fold after soreness in shoulder

KAMLOOPS — The Lions are being cautious with starting quarterback Michael Reilly, who has been nursing shoulder tenderness at training camp in Kamloops.

Reilly returned to the field on Tuesday (July 20) after missing four sessions. Today (July 21), he didn’t been participating with the first-team offense. He’s just been throwing the ball around lightly to not overwork the shoulder.

“It’s not a concern, but we’re trying not to let it be a concern,” Reilly told CFJC Today. “It’s a pitch-count situation right now. I think with a lot of our guys, they’re just trying to be very smart, having had 18 months off and then coming back into this thing. We don’t want to put ourselves in a bad situation.”

He added, “It’s frustrating at times because I’d prefer to be out there every single snap, but it’s a lot like when we have a preseason game and they don’t play the vets in the first one. You try to take a similar mentality right now.”

Lions head coach Rick Campbell says there is nothing to be worried about with Reilly’s shoulder. He will be slowly brought back into team drills leading up to the regular season opener Aug. 6 against Saskatchewan.

“He’s doing well. We just want to be smart him,” said Campbell. “We just want to be smart that he doesn’t have a chronic soreness, so he’s not injured. We’re just trying to be smart on his reps and we’re going to ramp him back up as we get through towards the end of this week and the last week to really get him going again because we just want him to have a fresh arm for the regular season.”
