Monte Creek Winery on a mission to help the endangered B.C. badger

KAMLOOPS — Monte Creek Winery outside of Kamloops has launched an effort to support and protect the endangered B.C. badger.

In a release, winery spokesperson Ashley Demedeiros says the stretch of the Trans Canada Highway outside of the winery — from Lafarge Road to Pritchard — has the highest badger mortality totals in the province.

According to the B.C. Conservation Data Centre, there are fewer than 350 B.C. badgers remaining, making them ‘imperilled’.

Vehicle strikes are a leading cause of death for badgers, as they cover a lot of territory during their summer mating season.

Demedeiros encourages motorists to slow down and watch for badgers as the travel through the area.

To support badger conservation and safety, the winery is selling badges and accepting donations in its tasting room during the month of July.

It is also auctioning off a pair of works of art painted by Bloom, the resident badger at the B.C. Wildlife Park.
